{"id":258,"date":"2015-09-15T20:36:08","date_gmt":"2015-09-15T20:36:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.simplyyouorganizing.com\/?p=258"},"modified":"2015-09-15T20:36:08","modified_gmt":"2015-09-15T20:36:08","slug":"step-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/simplyyouorganizing.com\/?p=258","title":{"rendered":"Step 2\u2026."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What is step 2?\u00a0 Maintenance, habits.\u00a0 Getting organized is fantastic.\u00a0 We go through everything, pare down on our belongings so we can enjoy what we have and use.\u00a0 We also pick great homes for our items where it makes sense to store them, they fit and they look good hopefully by putting them in a basket or bin or neatly in the location.\u00a0 All this is great, for like a day!<\/p>\n<p>So what happens the next day?\u00a0 Life.\u00a0 We have to use those items; we wear clothing, we make dinner and pull out half the kitchen, we play a game, the mail comes!<\/p>\n<p>Our belongings do not magically get put back, cleaned, folded, etc.\u00a0 We have to maintain them.\u00a0 All of this is the maintenance to our systems.\u00a0 It takes time, effort, will power to do.\u00a0 We need good habits and constant reminders to keep on top of our stuff.\u00a0 Or, you end up back to a mess.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some ways to maintain your space and belongings: (with commentary)<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Before you put something down, ask yourself \u2013 does it belong here? If not, ut oh.\u00a0 Really, don\u2019t put it down until it is back where it needs to be.\u00a0 Try to do this.<\/li>\n<li>Use your garbage cans; if it is in your hand and you no longer want it \u2013 let it go. (So maybe it isn\u2019t garbage; that is fine. \u00a0Recycle it or put it in the donation box that you should always have going.)<\/li>\n<li>Never leave a room empty handed. Those cups by your bed, grab them.<\/li>\n<li>Have one location in each room where you place items to \u201cdeal with\u201d later versus spread over every surface. Pick a time each week to then actually deal with them.<\/li>\n<li>Lists are your friend, if something will take more than 2 minutes \u2013 add it to your list and then find a time to do it.<\/li>\n<li>Your 4 most used spaces in the home; spend 5 minutes every day doing a full sweep. Put things back, throw out the trash, straighten askew items.\u00a0 And then walk out with what you can fit in your arms that doesn\u2019t below in that room.\u00a0 That\u2019s 20 minutes of clean sweeping daily.\u00a0 You can do it.<\/li>\n<li>Use your planner for standing maintenance.
